US Airports Hit Hard Over 1,300 Flights Canceled Due to Winter Storm Devin

NEW YORK โ€“ Winter Storm Devin has severely disrupted air travel in the United States, causing numerous flights canceled and delays during the busy holiday season. Passengers across major airports faced significant challenges.

According to flight tracking service FlightAware, a total of 1,382 flights canceled and 4,685 delayed by Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of hazardous travel conditions due to heavy snowfall across the upper Great Lakes region.

Authorities described road conditions as dangerous, particularly for travelers returning from the holiday weekend. The storm also brought a slight risk of flash flooding in southern California, along with strong winds and thunderstorms near the coast.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued a winter storm warning and deployed city crews to clear snow from roads. Major New York airports โ€” John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia โ€” warned passengers about potential delays and flights canceled.

More than half of all disruptions were reported at these New York airports, with the area alone experiencing 785 cancellations. Chicago airports were also heavily affected, placing both cities at the top of FlightAwareโ€™s โ€œMisery Map,โ€ which tracks flight disruptions nationwide.

Among airlines, JetBlue, Delta, and Republic Airways were the hardest hit. Hundreds of their flights were either delayed or canceled, affecting thousands of passengers. Airline officials advised travelers to check schedules before heading to the airport.

Passengers were urged to plan ahead, arrive early, and monitor updates from their airlines. Travel experts recommended flexible travel plans due to the unpredictable nature of the winter storm.

The NWS cautioned that storm conditions would persist into the weekend, potentially causing further disruptions. Travelers were advised to avoid unnecessary trips and prioritize safety.
