Several missiles and drones struck Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions on Saturday, just hours before President Volodymyr Zelenskiyโs scheduled Zelenskiy-Trump meeting in Florida. The meeting aims to discuss a possible peace plan to end nearly four years of conflict following Russiaโs February 2022 invasion.
Explosions were reported across the capital as Ukraineโs air defense units intercepted attacks. The military confirmed that Russian drones targeted Kyiv, northeastern, and southern regions. An air raid alert remained active in the capital for over four hours, though no immediate damage or power outages were reported.
The Zelenskiy-Trump meeting will primarily focus on territorial control, a major diplomatic sticking point. Ukraine seeks to halt fighting along current frontlines, while Moscow demands Ukrainian withdrawal from parts of the eastern Donetsk region. Discussions are also expected to cover a potential free economic zone and the security of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Zelenskiy told journalists that a 20-point draft peace plan, driven by U.S. mediation, is nearly complete. He highlighted that U.S. security guarantees are a key element, aiming to prevent future Russian aggression. โA lot can be decided before the New Year,โ Zelenskiy said.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, hosting the meeting, said he expects discussions to go well and indicated he may speak with Putin soon. Trump emphasized that the U.S. is central to finalizing the plan, adding, โHe doesnโt have anything until I approve it.โ
Kyiv has also proposed a referendum on territorial issues if the U.S. does not fully back Ukraineโs position. Russian officials, while noting differences in proposals, expressed cautious optimism that negotiations could reach a turning point.
As the Zelenskiy-Trump meeting approaches, the situation remains tense with ongoing attacks highlighting the urgency of finding a diplomatic resolution. Both leaders are under pressure to secure a deal that could potentially reshape the warโs trajectory.
