The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has confirmed the martyrdom of Abu Ubaida, the long-serving spokesperson of its military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades. The confirmation was made through an official video statement released on Wednesday.
In the video, the newly appointed spokesperson of the Al-Qassam Brigades announced that Abu Ubaida was martyred along with several senior commanders. The statement marked the first official confirmation from Hamas regarding his death.
During the announcement, the spokesperson revealed the real name of Abu Ubaida. He was identified as Huthaifa Al-Kahlout. The statement also provided details about leadership changes within the Al-Qassam Brigades following recent losses.
According to the spokesperson, Muhammad Al-Sinwar, the brother of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, assumed leadership of the Al-Qassam Brigades. He took over after the martyrdom of the groupโs former chief, Muhammad Deif.
Huthaifa Al-Kahlout played a significant role within the organization. Besides being the public voice of the Al-Qassam Brigades, he also headed its media division. This department is known as โAl-Ilam Al-Askari.โ
The statement highlighted that Al-Kahlout served as the spokesperson for more than two decades. During this period, he worked to modernize the groupโs media operations. His role shaped how the Al-Qassam Brigades communicated with supporters and the wider public.
The video also addressed the future of the spokesperson role. The new spokesperson announced that the title Abu Ubaida will continue to be used. He stated that Huthaifa Al-Kahlout left behind the title, which has now been assigned to him.
Hamas also released a separate official statement confirming the same information. It named the newly appointed spokesperson as Abu Ubaida, maintaining continuity in the groupโs public messaging.
The announcement comes months after claims made by Israel. In August, Israeli authorities stated that they had targeted Abu Ubaida during military operations. At the time, no confirmation was provided by Hamas.
