Bollywood actress Yami Gautam recently reflected on a memorable incident from her early days in theatre. During an interview with IANS, she shared how she once delivered a line in an unusual way, leaving her classmates in splits.
Yami Gautam recalled, โThere was a new theatre teacher at school, and theatre was just being introduced. I had to say the line, โKeep still, you little devil, or I will slit your throat.โ
I delivered it in a very weird way, and everyone burst out laughing. I was being very serious, but apparently, I sounded like a street performer.โShe added, โAt least they remembered my lines. I gave it a shot.โ
The actress also spoke about the role of a director in shaping performances. She emphasized that actors are instruments to realize the directorโs vision.
โThe director is there to hold you back. You can perform a character in ten different ways, and thereโs nothing right or wrong,โ Yami Gautam said. She added, โWe are illustrations on screen of the directorโs world, so following their vision is part of the fun.โ
Talking about her upcoming film Haq, Yami Gautam explained that it draws inspiration from a landmark legal case. The story is based on Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, in which Shah Bano, a 62-year-old Muslim woman, sought maintenance from her husband after being divorced through triple talaq.
The Supreme Court ruled in her favor under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code, stating that maintenance applies to all citizens, irrespective of religion.
Haq explores this historic case while highlighting personal and societal challenges. Yami Gautam said the film allowed her to portray nuanced emotions while staying true to the real-life story.
She also noted the importance of understanding the directorโs perspective to enhance the authenticity of her performance.
With her mix of humor, reflection, and insight, Yami Gautam continues to share her journey from theatre to films. Her dedication and ability to adapt to various roles make her one of Bollywoodโs most respected and versatile actors.
