A student athlete was critically injured during a high jump event at a school sports competition in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The athlete, Mudaser Gul, missed the landing mat and fell directly onto the ground, sustaining a severe back injury.
The incident occurred at a sports event organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department. A video of the accident quickly went viral on social media, raising widespread criticism of provincial sports and education authorities over alleged negligence.
Mudaser Gul, a resident of Bannu district and a student at Government High School Mama Khel Banochi, was reported to have lost consciousness after the fall. Witnesses said there were no proper safety mats or first-aid facilities available at the venue, highlighting serious lapses in event management.
The injured student athlete was immediately transported to District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Social media users condemned the incident, calling it evidence of โcriminal negligenceโ and criticizing authorities for failing to ensure basic safety measures.
In response, Yar Muhammad Khan Niazi, Focal Person to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, confirmed that the Advisor to the Chief Minister on Sports and Youth Affairs, Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand, had taken swift action. The advisor contacted the athleteโs family, expressed regret, and assured full support.
The provincial government has pledged to cover all medical expenses for the student athlete and provide comprehensive care during his recovery. A formal inquiry into the incident will be conducted, and legal action is expected against officials responsible for the unsafe arrangements.
Officials emphasized that the safety and welfare of athletes remain a top priority. Authorities also announced plans to review safety protocols at school sports events to prevent similar incidents in the future.
