Why Bangladesh Stopped Showing the IPL After the Mustafizur Rahman Snub

NEW DELHI – A fresh controversy has emerged between Bangladesh and India, centered on cricket and broadcasting rights. The issue has gained attention across the region and online platforms.

The dispute began after Kolkata Knight Riders released Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. The decision came ahead of the upcoming season. It quickly triggered strong reactions in Bangladesh.

Soon after, the Bangladesh government took a major step. Authorities ordered local television channels to stop airing the IPL. The directive was issued through a formal notification from the Information Ministry. The decision followed a request from the country’s Sports Adviser.

Officials said the exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman deeply hurt public sentiment. According to the statement, the move left the government with no option. As a result, all IPL broadcasts were suspended across the country. The ban will remain in effect until further notice.

The controversy did not stop at broadcasting. It soon moved into the international cricket arena. Bangladesh’s Sports and Youth Affairs Adviser, Asif Nazrul, instructed the Bangladesh Cricket Board to act. The board approached the International Cricket Council for intervention.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board requested a venue change for the T20 World Cup 2026. Bangladesh is scheduled to play several matches in India. These include three games in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. Officials asked the ICC to consider shifting the matches to a neutral venue. Sri Lanka was suggested as one possible option.

Reports claim that Mustafizur Rahman was released after guidance from the BCCI. The instruction allegedly came amid rising political and diplomatic tensions. Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by actor Shah Rukh Khan, ended the contract shortly after.

Cricket analysts say the situation reflects broader strains between the two neighbors. Sports decisions are now closely linked with diplomatic relations. Fans on both sides have expressed concern over the growing fallout.

The IPL has a large fan base in Bangladesh. Its suspension marks a rare move in the region’s cricket history. Observers warn that prolonged restrictions could impact regional cooperation in sports.
