Govt Announces 18 January As Public Holiday For Shab-e-Meraj

Kuwait and Oman have declared a Public Holiday on January 18 to mark Shab-e-Meraj, a sacred night in Islam. The night commemorates Prophet Muhammad SAW’s miraculous journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascension to the heavens.

Shab-e-Meraj, also known as Isra and Mi’raj, falls on the 27th of Rajab according to the Hijri calendar. This year, it corresponds to January 16 on the Gregorian calendar. Muslims worldwide observe this spiritually significant night with prayers, reflection, and acts of charity.

During Shab-e-Meraj, Prophet Muhammad SAW traveled from Masjid al-Haram in Mecca to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. He then ascended to the heavens, a journey that inspires millions of believers and emphasizes devotion and spiritual growth.

While Kuwait and Oman officially recognize the occasion with a Public Holiday, the United Arab Emirates will not observe the day as a holiday this year. Residents in the UAE are encouraged to note the difference in regional observances.

On this holy night, Muslims perform extra prayers, including nafl or Tahajjud, recite the Holy Quran, and send blessings upon Prophet Muhammad SAW. The night is also marked by charity and good deeds, reinforcing the values of piety and community service.

The announcement of a Public Holiday in Kuwait and Oman allows citizens to fully participate in religious rituals and spend time with family and the community. Schools, government offices, and many businesses in these countries will remain closed in observance of the sacred occasion.

Shab-e-Meraj remains one of the most important nights in the Islamic calendar. The Public Holiday in Kuwait and Oman provides an opportunity for believers to honor the spiritual journey of Prophet Muhammad SAW and reflect on the lessons of faith, patience, and devotion that the night symbolizes.
