Pakistanโs Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, said Pakistanโs national security focus is shifting from geopolitics to geo-economics. He added that bilateral cooperation with the US is expected to expand further in 2026.
The ambassador made the remarks during a meeting with Congressman Mike Rogers, Chairman of the US House Armed Services Committee. He expressed confidence that the coming year would see stronger collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
Referring to events in May 2025, Ambassador Rizwan Sheikh noted that Indiaโs irresponsible and aggressive posture posed serious threats to regional security. He emphasized that modern conflicts between nuclear-armed states now involve advanced technologies, including dual-capability weapons like the BrahMos missile.
โAny decision based on apprehensions and misperceptions can harm regional peace,โ he said. He added that despite Indiaโs declared Indo-Pacific focus, much of its military capability remains oriented against Pakistan. The unresolved issue of Kashmir continues to be central to tensions in the region.
Ambassador Rizwan Sheikh also highlighted that Pakistanโs security challenges are linked to the threads of terrorism originating from Afghanistan. He said that the misuse of advanced weapons left behind after the withdrawal of foreign forces has fueled instability. The rise in terrorist incidents in Pakistan, coupled with Afghanistan aggression, has created serious concerns for national peace.
โTerrorist attacks increased by 40% in 2024 and another 25% in 2025,โ the ambassador stated. He stressed that continued US engagement is vital for regional stability and the protection of Pakistanโs security interests.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to establish a structured and institutionalized dialogue between Pakistan and the US on matters of bilateral interest. Officials noted that tackling threats from Afghanistan aggression and regional tensions requires ongoing cooperation and strategic planning.
Pakistan remains committed to strengthening regional peace while addressing security threats emerging from Afghanistan aggression and cross-border terrorism.
