Schools Winter Vacations May Move to January as Cold Weather Intensifies

ISLAMABAD โ€“ A change in the school calendar may be coming for students and parents. Education officials are reviewing the timing of Winter Vacations after noticing colder weather patterns.

For many years, schools closed in late December for winter holidays. Students returned to classes on January 1. However, recent weather trends suggest January is now colder than December. This shift has raised concerns about student health and safety.

The Sindh Education and Literacy Department is considering moving Winter Vacations to January. The proposal may take effect from the 2026โ€“27 academic year. Officials say the idea is still under review and not yet final.

Education authorities explained that climate changes are influencing this possible decision. December temperatures have become milder in recent years. In contrast, January now brings strong winds and very low temperatures. In some areas, temperatures fall into single digits.

Under the current system, schools reopen during the coldest days. This forces students to travel early in harsh weather. Parents and teachers have often raised concerns about this issue.

The proposal will be discussed in the upcoming meeting of the Steering Committee. If approved, schools in Sindh, including Karachi and nearby regions, will observe Winter Vacations in January instead of December.

Earlier this year, authorities took temporary steps to manage extreme cold. Schools reopened as scheduled, but the cold worsened soon after. To reduce risks, class timings were changed.

With approval from Education Minister Sardar Shah, schools started classes at 9 am. This adjustment remained in place from January 12 to January 26. Officials said the change helped students avoid early morning cold.

Education experts believe moving Winter Vacations could provide long-term relief. They say it would align school breaks with actual weather conditions. This could improve attendance and student comfort.

Parents are also watching the development closely. Many support the idea, especially for younger children. They feel January holidays would better protect students from severe cold.

Officials clarified that no final decision has been made yet. Any change will be announced well in advance. Schools will follow official instructions once the policy is approved.

If implemented, the revised Winter Vacations schedule could reshape the academic calendar. It would mark a major shift in how schools respond to changing climate patterns.
