The Sindh government has announced a public holiday on January 17 in schools to mark Shab-e-Meraj.
According to a notification from the Sindh Education and Literacy Department, all public and private educational institutions will remain closed on the day. This includes schools, colleges, and other institutions across the province, including Karachi.
The notification confirms that January 17 will be observed as a general public holiday in schools for the religious occasion. Students and staff are advised to plan accordingly.
Shab-e-Meraj falls on the 27th night of Rajab and commemorates the sacred journey of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet was taken from the Holy Kaaba in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. He then ascended to the heavens on the celestial mount Al-Buraq, receiving divine commandments.
The term “Meraj” comes from the Arabic word Urooj, meaning ascension. The event symbolizes spiritual elevation and closeness to Allah. It holds immense significance in Islamic history.
Muslims observe Shab-e-Meraj with special prayers, Quran recitation, and voluntary fasting. The night provides an opportunity for reflection and devotion for believers across Sindh.
The Sindh government’s announcement ensures that students, teachers, and staff can fully participate in the religious observances. Authorities urge schools and educational institutions to comply with the public holiday notification.
Officials emphasized that the closure of schools is part of the government’s commitment to allowing citizens to observe important religious events with respect and devotion.
Residents are advised to plan activities accordingly, as government offices and other non-educational institutions may follow separate schedules for Shab-e-Meraj observance.
