Karachi Gul Plaza Tragedy Day 3: Death Toll Reaches 26 as Rescue Operations Continue

The deadly Gul Plaza tragedy in Karachi has entered its third day. Authorities have not yet declared the site fully cleared. Rescue teams are still working under extremely risky conditions.

According to officials, the death toll has reached 26. Out of these, 20 bodies have been formally identified. Medico-legal examinations of 19 bodies have also been completed so far.

Anxiety remains high among families waiting near the site. Authorities confirmed that 75 people are still missing. Officials have also received location data for 39 individuals believed to have been inside the building when the incident occurred.

Rescue operation continues under danger

Search and rescue operations are ongoing despite serious safety threats. Rescue 1122 teams are entering different sections of the damaged building. Officials estimate that nearly 40 percent of Gul Plaza has already collapsed.

The remaining structure is described as extremely weak. Authorities say it could collapse at any time. Due to this risk, workers are only sent inside after strict safety checks.

Officials confirmed that rescue teams will re-enter the building today. The goal is to continue search and recovery efforts without putting lives at further risk.

Identification process remains slow

The identification of recovered bodies is moving slowly. Officials say the condition of the remains has made the process difficult.

Police Surgeon Dr. Samia confirmed that samples from 14 bodies have been collected. One body was identified through a national identity card. In addition, 48 DNA samples from relatives have been obtained.

All samples have been sent to the Sindh Forensic DNA Lab. Samples were also shared with ICCBS and Karachi University. Authorities hope this will speed up identification.

Vehicles removed to reduce structural load

As a safety measure, authorities have started removing vehicles from the rooftop parking area. So far, 16 vehicles have been taken out.

These include 12 motorcycles, four Suzuki vehicles, and one rickshaw. Officials say removing this load is essential due to the weak structure of Gul Plaza.

Area declared red zone

The Rapid Response Force and crowd control teams are present at the site. The area has been declared a red zone. Citizens have been strictly advised to stay away.

People have been instructed to remain in designated safe zones. Security agencies remain on high alert to prevent overcrowding.

Clearing operation to begin

The deputy commissioner (South) said preparations are underway to begin the formal clearing operation today. Authorities stressed that safety remains the top priority.

Rescue efforts will continue until every missing person is accounted for.
