Morocco achieved their highest-ever FIFA ranking, moving up to eighth place despite losing the Africa Cup of Nations final to Senegal. Senegal climbed to 12th in the latest FIFA ranking after their victory.
The AFCON final took place in Rabat on Sunday, where Morocco had a chance to win with a last-minute penalty. Brahim Diaz missed the kick after waiting 14 minutes for Senegal players to return following a protest over the penalty decision.
Morocco’s rise to eighth marks their best FIFA ranking ever, surpassing their previous high of 10th in April 1998. The achievement places Morocco among the top ten teams globally and sets a new benchmark for African football.
Senegal, champions for the second time in three editions, moved up seven spots to their highest-ever FIFA ranking, previously reaching 17th in 2024. Their AFCON success highlights the growing strength of African teams on the world stage.
AFCON results significantly impacted African teams’ positions. Nigeria, the bronze medallists, gained 79.09 points and jumped 12 spots to 26th. Cameroon also moved up 12 places to 45th. Egypt climbed four spots to 31st, just behind Algeria.
On the other hand, Gabon lost 44.97 points after an early AFCON exit, dropping to 86th. Equatorial Guinea suffered the biggest fall, sliding 10 spots to 107th.
Globally, Spain retained the top position in the FIFA ranking, followed by World Cup champions Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, and the Netherlands. The top seven teams remain unchanged from the previous ranking.
Morocco’s rise in the FIFA ranking reflects their consistent performance, strong squad, and potential to challenge the world’s best teams in upcoming tournaments. African football continues to make a mark on the global stage, with several teams achieving historic improvements in the latest ranking update.
