Actress Dur-e-Fishan Saleem has publicly demanded action from Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab following the tragic Gul Plaza fire.
Taking to Instagram, Saleem expressed outrage over what she called โsustained neglectโ leading to repeated loss of lives in the city. She said, โWhen lives are lost repeatedly due to failures that could have been prevented, silence becomes complicity. Accountability must be demanded!!!โ
Saleem criticized the slow response of authorities and stressed that public grief cannot be met with โrehearsed condolences and delayed reports.โ She added, โLeadership exists to protect lives, and when that protection fails again and again, consequences must follow.โ
In her Instagram Story, Saleem tagged Mayor Murtaza Wahab and demanded action, writing, โWhen tragedies occur under a systemโs watch, those at the helm must answer. Karachi deserves more than statements. It deserves action and urgency!!!โ
The deadly fire at Gul Plaza, located on M.A. Jinnah Road, started late on Saturday night, January 17. The blaze lasted nearly 36 hours before being fully controlled. Gul Plaza housed around 1,200 family-owned shops selling wedding clothes, toys, crockery, and other items.
Earlier, Saleem also criticized the mayor over the cityโs response to the tragic death of little Ibrahim, who fell into an open manhole in November. She called for stronger preventive measures to avoid repeated incidents in Karachi.
Officials have faced pressure to improve safety standards in public spaces after the Gul Plaza fire. Saleemโs public statements reflect growing frustration among citizens who are urging authorities to take immediate steps.
By publicly speaking out, Dur-e-Fishan Saleem demands action to ensure accountability and safer conditions for Karachi residents. Her statements highlight the need for stronger leadership and immediate reforms to prevent future tragedies.
