Princess Anne Presents Prestigious Award To Hillwalking Hijabi Zahrah Mahmood

Princess Anne honours Hillwalking advocate Zahrah Mahmood with an MBE for her work promoting diversity in outdoor activities. The investiture took place at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on Wednesday, January 21.

Zahrah Mahmood, 35, known as the โ€œHillwalking Hijabi,โ€ was recognised for her voluntary efforts to encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to explore the outdoors. Mahmood, a Glasgow-based social media influencer, is also the newly appointed president of Ramblers Scotland.

The Princess Royal praised Mahmood for โ€œexemplifying the spirit of innovation and commitment to social change.โ€ Her work has helped make hillwalking and outdoor pursuits more inclusive for people of all cultures, religions, and financial backgrounds.

Speaking after the ceremony, Mahmood described the moment as โ€œsurreal.โ€ She said the MBE not only recognises her personally but also validates the work she does to inspire others.

โ€œIt amplifies the messages that people like myself are trying to get out,โ€ she said. โ€œEverybody belongs in the outdoors, no matter what background or culture or religion or even financial background youโ€™re from. Itโ€™s a place for everybody.โ€

Princess Anne honours Hillwalking pioneers like Mahmood to highlight the importance of inclusion and accessibility in outdoor activities. Mahmoodโ€™s recognition brings attention to the challenges faced by underrepresented communities in accessing natural spaces.

The award has been widely celebrated across Scotland, with outdoor enthusiasts praising Mahmoodโ€™s dedication. Her approach encourages more families and individuals to take part in hillwalking safely and confidently.

Other honourees at the ceremony included Scottish historian and author Alistair Moffat, who received an MBE for contributions to literature and culture.

Zahrah Mahmoodโ€™s MBE demonstrates how passion and advocacy in outdoor activities can be acknowledged at the highest level. By recognising her efforts, the Royal Family reinforces the message that the outdoors should be welcoming to all.

Princess Anneโ€™s recognition further underscores how the UK honours individuals making meaningful social contributions. Mahmoodโ€™s achievements are now celebrated nationally as an example of positive change.
