Cold Winds Grip Karachi As Temperatures Fall To Single Digits

Cold winds from Siberia swept across Karachi on Friday, causing temperatures to fall to single digit levels. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the minimum temperature dropped to 8°C.

The PMD reported that strong northwesterly winds from Balochistan, especially from the Quetta region, were blowing at speeds up to 20 kilometres per hour. These winds intensified the chill across the city. The “feels like” temperature reached 4°C, making the cold more severe.

The drop to single digit temperatures led to less traffic during late-night and early-morning hours. Fewer people were seen visiting parks for morning walks or exercise due to icy winds blowing overnight.

Heavy rainfall on Thursday contributed to the drop in temperatures. Surjani Town recorded the highest rainfall at 26.3 millimetres. Meteorologists said the western winds influencing Karachi’s weather may bring light rain by Thursday afternoon, but no heavy rainfall is expected.

The PMD warned that the current cold wave is likely to continue until Sunday, with minimum temperatures possibly falling further to 7°C. Night-time temperatures will remain low, while mornings are expected to be cool and partly cloudy.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially children and the elderly, to dress warmly and avoid exposure to cold winds. Precautions are advised during early hours when temperatures remain at single digit levels.

Meteorologists also noted that western weather systems will continue to influence Karachi, keeping nights cold and days mild. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates for sudden changes in temperature or light rainfall.

The unusual cold spell marks one of the chilliest weeks in Karachi this winter, emphasizing the need for preparedness. Experts say the cold wave could continue for the next few days before temperatures gradually rise.
