Private Schools Announce Important Updates For Parents On Books And Uniforms

The Punjab School Education Department has issued an official update for parents, prohibiting private schools from forcing purchases from specific shops.

According to the notification, no private school can compel parents to buy uniforms, books, or other required items from designated vendors. Schools must allow parents to purchase from any source.

The department emphasized that such practices violate laws governing private schools. Parents are advised to report any pressure from schools regarding compulsory purchases. This notice serves as a clear update for parents on their rights.

Complaints can be submitted to the relevant District Education Authority in each district. The department assures parents that all grievances will be addressed promptly.

Last November, the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) had issued show-cause notices to 17 major private schools. The action was taken after an inquiry revealed that schools were selling expensive, logo-branded notebooks, workbooks, and uniforms to students.

The CCP inquiry highlighted that many schools had undisclosed agreements with specific vendors. These schools were accused of abusing their dominant position and forcing parents into unnecessary expenses. They were asked to submit written responses within 14 days.

This directive from the Punjab education department acts as an important update for parents, clarifying that schools cannot restrict purchases to selected shops. Authorities are stressing transparency and fairness in school dealings.

Officials also urged parents to remain vigilant and report any violations. The department highlighted that ensuring affordability and preventing exploitation of parents is a priority.

Private schools are now legally required to comply with the directive or face penalties. The move has been welcomed by parents and consumer rights groups across the province.
