Karachi Fire Safety Survey Prompts SBCA Notices To More Than 100 Buildings

The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has launched an emergency survey of buildings in Karachi after the massive Gul Plaza fire. The blaze left several dead and many untraced, shocking the city.

Over 100 buildings, including shopping malls, stores, residential complexes, and hospitals, have received notices for insufficient firefighting measures. The SBCA has warned that all premises must arrange proper Karachi fire safety measures within three days. Non-compliance may lead to FIRs or other legal action.

The notices emphasized that firefighting equipment must be fully installed and functional. Buildings are required to maintain fire-resistant systems, regularly inspect electrical wiring, and ensure load management to prevent hazards.

โ€œAll emergency pathways, corridors, and exits must remain clear and accessible,โ€ the notice read. โ€œDangerous inflammable materials should be removed, and fire equipment placed in appropriate locations.โ€

Premises are also required to install emergency lights, alarm systems, and signals. The notice instructed building management to include trained firefighters in their teams to handle potential emergencies.

Failure to comply could result in premises being sealed or FIRs being registered. The SBCA clarified that completion certificates may also be canceled for non-compliant buildings.

The emergency survey was ordered by the Chief Minister of Sindh and is being overseen by the DG SBCA. Authorities said the three-day compliance period is crucial to improve Karachi fire safety across the city.

The SBCA stressed that precautionary measures are compulsory under building and town planning regulations. Officials said the initiative aims to prevent future tragedies and ensure public safety in high-risk buildings.

Experts say the Gul Plaza fire highlights the urgent need for strict adherence to Karachi fire safety rules and proactive monitoring by authorities.
