Punjab Govt Decides to Appoint Rao Abdul Karim as Punjab IGP

LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to appoint Rao Abdul Karim as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab. The decision marks an important administrative change in the provinceโ€™s top police leadership.

According to official sources, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has formally approved the appointment. The notification is expected to be issued soon after completion of procedural steps.

Senior police officer Rao Abdul Karim is currently serving as Additional Inspector General. He is known for his long experience in policing and administrative roles. Officials believe his appointment will help strengthen law enforcement across the province.

Before the final decision, other senior officers were also under consideration. These included Lahore Capital City Police Officer Bilal Siddique Kamyana and Additional IG of the Counter Terrorism Department, Waseem Sial. After internal consultations, the government selected Rao Abdul Karim for the post.

Sources said the appointment was made after reviewing the officersโ€™ service records and professional experience. The government aims to improve policing standards and address public safety concerns through strong leadership.

Meanwhile, outgoing Punjab Inspector General Dr Usman Anwar is expected to receive a new assignment at the federal level. Officials said his transfer is part of a routine reshuffle within senior police ranks. No official announcement has yet been made regarding his new role.

The change in police leadership comes at a time when Punjab faces challenges related to crime control, traffic management, and public order. The provincial government has repeatedly emphasized the need for reforms and improved coordination within law enforcement agencies.

Observers say the new IGP will be expected to focus on merit-based postings, accountability, and better public service delivery. Strengthening coordination between police units and improving response time are also seen as key priorities.

Police officials welcomed the decision and expressed hope that the transition would be smooth. They said continuity in policies and clear direction from leadership are essential for effective policing.
