Veteran actress Asma Abbas has opened up about her unique family experience, sharing rare insights into her bond with her husband’s first wife. In a recent interview with her niece, Nariman Ansari, she reflected on empathy and respect in a polygamous marriage.
Asma Abbas recalls 12 years of living under the same roof with her husband’s first wife. She explained that she chose understanding over rivalry, saying, “I just thought that she is a woman like me, and I should give her the respect she deserves. I knew that I was younger, beautiful, and that her relationship was 12 years old, but it could be me in her place.”
She emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive relationship. “It’s better to make this relationship positive instead of turning it toxic. Abbas used to get jealous of our strong relationship. We would wear the same clothes, and I used to give her all the money, from which she gave me pocket money. The kitchen was run by her,” she shared.
Asma Abbas further recalls 12 years of simple yet meaningful interactions. She let her co-wife take the front seat, followed her advice in household matters, and respected her role in managing the home. “We stayed together in one house for 12 years. She left us early. I believe Abbas’s life had to run smoothly; that’s why Allah gave him another woman before the first one passed,” she added.
The actress is a mother of three children, including daughter Zara Noor Abbas and sons Ahmad Abbas Gill and Waqas Abbas Gill. She met her husband while performing at Lahore’s Alhamra Theatre and married him within two months of meeting.
