Authorities have placed Islamabad and surrounding areas on high alert following a suicide attack at a mosque in Tarlai, Rawalpindi. The blast killed at least 31 worshippers and injured several others on Friday.
The suicide bomber attempted to enter the mosque but was stopped at the main gate. He then detonated his explosives, causing multiple casualties. Police confirmed the attacker was affiliated with the Indian proxy group Fitna-al-Khawarij (FAK).
Rescue teams quickly responded, transporting the deceased and injured to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Polyclinic Hospital. Emergency wards were activated, and medical staff leaves were cancelled to ensure treatment for all victims. Doctors warned that the death toll may rise as many remain in critical condition.
The Health Minister emphasized that all available resources are being used to care for the wounded. He personally oversaw hospital operations and stated that no negligence will be tolerated.
Authorities revealed that the suicide bomber had previously received terrorist training in Afghanistan and had traveled there multiple times. Officials warned that militant groups operating in Afghanistan continue to pose a threat to regional security under the Taliban regime. Some sources suggested coordination between elements in Afghanistan and India in these attacks.
Following the incident, police and security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. Key suspects linked to previous attacks, including a November bombing in Islamabad, remain under investigation. Security agencies are on high alert to prevent any further attacks.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the blast. The prime minister directed Health Minister Mustafa Kamal to supervise medical treatment and ensure proper care for the victims.
Officials also warned the public to stay vigilant. The government has increased patrolling and surveillance, declaring that those targeting innocent citizens are โenemies of humanity.โ Security forces remain on high alert as the investigation continues and preventive measures are strengthened across the region.
