A police officer was martyred while providing security for a polio team during an ongoing vaccination campaign in the Jananabad area. Armed attackers opened fire on the officer and fled the scene, according to District Police Officer (DPO) Chaman.
The incident prompted immediate action from local security forces, who launched a search operation to apprehend the attackers. Authorities confirmed that the officer died on the spot as a result of the gunfire, highlighting the risks faced by personnel safeguarding health workers.
Despite security challenges, the government reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating polio from Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Dr. Chris Elias, President of Global Development at the Gates Foundation, in Islamabad to discuss ongoing vaccination campaigns. The prime minister emphasized that a well-organized and dedicated polio team is central to these efforts.
PM Shehbaz praised the support from international partners, including the Gates Foundation and Saudi Arabia, which have played a key role in Pakistan’s fight against polio. He noted that significant progress has been made, but emergency measures remain necessary to completely eliminate the disease.
The prime minister also highlighted close coordination between federal and provincial authorities to ensure that polio teams can operate safely across the country. Relevant projects under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for polio eradication will continue without interruption.
Dr. Chris Elias acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts and appreciated the prime minister’s personal commitment to the cause. He noted that the country is steadily moving toward full polio eradication, thanks to dedicated vaccination campaigns and well-coordinated teams.
Authorities have urged communities to fully support vaccination drives and allow polio teams safe access to households. Officials reiterated that protecting health workers is critical to achieving a polio-free Pakistan.
