China Unveils World’s Largest eVTOL Aircraft, ‘Matrix’

China has unveiled the world’s largest eVTOL aircraft, named Matrix, signaling its growing presence in the low-altitude aviation market. The aircraft is developed by Chinese start-up AutoFlight, backed by electric vehicle battery giant CATL.

The Matrix eVTOL aircraft weighs five tonnes (11,000 lbs) and features a 20-meter wingspan. Measuring 17.1 meters long and 3.3 meters high, it comes in two variants for passenger transport and heavy-duty logistics. The passenger version can carry up to 10 people, surpassing existing eVTOL models that typically hold four to six passengers.

AutoFlight is among China’s leading commercial eVTOL aircraft manufacturers, alongside companies like Ehang and Geely’s Aerofugia. These ventures benefit from strong government support, which includes guidelines to regulate the low-altitude economy. China plans to implement basic regulations by 2027 and over 300 standards by 2030 to ensure safety and efficiency.

Founded in 2017, AutoFlight initially focused on cargo transport but has recently seen a surge in passenger flight demand, which now accounts for 70% of its orders. The company expects to secure certification for passenger use within one to two years, allowing it to begin fulfilling orders for future deliveries.

With CATL’s backing, AutoFlight aims to make aerial travel more accessible and competitive with premium ground-based ride-hailing services. The company also plans to expand internationally, targeting regions with underdeveloped infrastructure. Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East are identified as key markets for growth.

Experts say the launch of the Matrix eVTOL aircraft demonstrates China’s ambitions to dominate the emerging urban air mobility sector. Its size, capacity, and dual-use design highlight a major step forward in both passenger and logistics aviation.
