Pakistan Unveils ‘SMASH’ Hypersonic Anti-Ship Missile at World Defense Show

Pakistan’s Global Industrial and Defence Solutions (GIDS) has introduced its new hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missile, named SMASH, at the World Defense Show 2026 in Riyadh. The unveiling highlights Pakistan’s focus on advanced and precision-guided defense technology.

The SMASH missile is designed with a dual-role concept. It can strike both naval and land-based targets. This allows a single missile system to handle different mission requirements. Officials say this flexibility makes SMASH suitable for modern warfare environments.

In its anti-ship configuration, the missile has a range of about 290 kilometers. It carries a 384-kilogram warhead designed to hit moving maritime targets. The missile uses an advanced navigation system that combines GNSS-assisted inertial guidance with an active radar seeker. This setup allows high-precision targeting at sea.

GIDS said the SMASH missile can approach its target at near-vertical angles. This feature helps it avoid modern air defense systems. The missile is powered by a single-stage, dual-thrust solid rocket motor. Officials claim it has an accuracy of 10 meters or less.

During the final stage of flight, the missile can reach speeds above Mach 2. These high speeds place the SMASH system in the hypersonic category. The combination of speed, precision, and maneuverability is designed to improve its effectiveness against defended targets.

For land-attack missions, the missile keeps the same 290-kilometer range. However, the warhead weight increases to 444 kilograms. This allows greater impact against ground targets. The land-attack version uses a GNSS-assisted inertial navigation system for guidance. Its reported accuracy is within 15 meters.

Defence officials say the SMASH missile was developed to meet the growing demand for long-range precision weapons. Such systems are increasingly important in high-threat and contested environments. Analysts note that many regions, including the Middle East, are focusing on fast and accurate strike systems.
