Discord has announced a major policy change affecting users worldwide. From early March, age verification will become mandatory for full access to the platform. The move is part of a wider effort to make online spaces safer for children and teenagers.
According to the company, all new and existing accounts will shift to restricted settings by default. These limits will apply until users confirm their age. Without verification, accounts will only have access to a teen-appropriate experience.
The update means users must verify their age to unlock all features. These include joining age-gated servers and viewing sensitive content. Full participation in voice channels will also require verification. Discord says the change aims to balance safety with user freedom.
To complete the process, users will have two verification options. One option requires submitting a valid government-issued ID. The second option uses facial age estimation through a short video selfie. Both methods are designed to be quick and simple.
Discord has addressed privacy concerns linked to the new system. The company stated that video selfies are processed directly on the user’s device. These videos are not stored on Discord servers at any stage.
For users who submit identification documents, the company provided further clarification. It said third-party vendors handle ID verification. These vendors delete the documents shortly after age confirmation. This step is meant to reduce long-term data storage risks.
The platform emphasized that age verification will usually be a one-time requirement. Most users will not need to repeat the process once their age is confirmed. However, accounts flagged for review may be asked to reverify.
This decision follows growing global pressure on social media platforms. Governments and child safety groups have called for stronger protections online. Many countries are reviewing digital safety laws focused on underage users.
By enforcing age checks, Discord aims to limit exposure to harmful or inappropriate content. The company believes the policy will help create safer communities. It also hopes the system will support responsible online interaction.
