Universal Pictures is reviving its beloved franchise with The Mummy, planning a fourth installment in 2026.
The new film promises a darker take on the classic monster. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. Fans are excited about the reunion, nearly 20 years after Fraser’s last adventure in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
The original Mummy premiered in 1999, followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008. The upcoming film aims to reconnect with the adventure and supernatural elements that made the first two movies a hit.
Universal has chosen Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, also known as Radio Silence, to direct The Mummy 4. The duo are known for revitalizing horror franchises like Scream and delivering unique takes on Universal monsters, making them a strong fit for the project.
Gillett described the script by David Coggeshall as “beautiful, sweeping, scary, and fun,” indicating that the new Mummy will honor the franchise’s adventurous roots while introducing a fresh, darker tone.
The third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, was less well-received due to recasting and weaker storylines. Reports suggest that The Mummy 4 may retcon or erase events from the third film to focus on the O’Connells’ classic supernatural adventures.
While plot details are still under wraps, fans can expect an epic adventure involving an undead menace. The new film will likely bring back iconic characters and possibly even Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, adding to the sense of nostalgia.
Universal has set the release date for May 19, 2028, giving fans time to revisit the original films and build anticipation. With Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and a talented directorial team, The Mummy 4 is shaping up to be a thrilling return to the franchise’s roots.
The revival of The Mummy marks a major step in Universal’s plans to bring classic monsters back with modern storytelling, promising scares, adventure, and nostalgia for long-time fans.
