The Supreme Court has directed authorities to arrange a medical examination of the PTI founder’s eye condition before February 16. The court also ordered that he be allowed to speak with his sons before the same date.
A two-member bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, heard petitions related to the Toshakhana criminal case. During the hearing, the bench stressed that health concerns must be treated as a priority.
The Chief Justice said the court needed clarity on the government’s position regarding medical facilities. He noted that the state is responsible for providing proper healthcare to prisoners.
The Attorney General assured the court that necessary medical care would be provided. He said the state would take corrective action if any detainee was dissatisfied.
The court ordered that a team of doctors be formed to examine the PTI founder’s eye before the deadline. His lawyer, Salman Safdar, requested that a family member be present during the medical check-up. The court rejected this request.
Safdar also asked that certain books be provided to his client. The Attorney General said reading material would be allowed if recommended by doctors due to the PTI founder’s eye condition.
During the proceedings, it was reported that Imran Khan expressed satisfaction with jail security and food arrangements. However, concerns about his eyesight were highlighted in a detailed report submitted by Barrister Salman Safdar.
The seven-page report recommended an urgent examination of the PTI founder’s eye by specialists, including Dr. Faisal Sultan and Dr. Asim Yousuf. According to the report, his right eye suddenly lost vision. He claimed he could now see only 10 to 15 percent.
The report stated that his eyesight was normal three to four months ago. He later experienced blurred vision and repeatedly complained to jail authorities. It was alleged that no immediate action was taken.
The court emphasized that timely medical attention is essential. Authorities have been directed to complete the eye examination and arrange the phone call with his sons before February 16.
