Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has filed multiple applications in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking bail and suspension of his sentence on medical grounds. The petitions relate to the Toshakhana-II and ยฃ190 million Al-Qadir Trust cases.
In his applications, the PTI founder claimed political victimisation and highlighted serious health concerns. He was recently transferred from Central Jail Adiyala, Rawalpindi, to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad for treatment of a severe eye ailment.
According to a medical report submitted by the Friend of the Court (Amicus Curiae) appointed by the Supreme Court, Imran Khan suffered progressive vision loss in his right eye after October 2025. The report stated he now has only 15 percent vision in the affected eye, despite treatment by Dr. Muhammad Arif at PIMS, who diagnosed severe damage caused by a blood clot.
The applications argue that his criminal appeal raises substantial legal questions that may take time to resolve. To prevent a miscarriage of justice, the former prime minister is seeking bail and suspension of the sentence while the appeals proceed. He emphasized that such serious medical conditions cannot be treated adequately within jail premises, particularly at his age of 73.
Imran Khanโs legal team further argued that advanced age or serious medical conditions are valid grounds for granting bail, even in cases with charges carrying life imprisonment or death penalties. Additionally, an urgent application seeks early hearing of the suspension plea in the ยฃ190 million case.
Barristers Salman Safdar and Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry, representing Khan, requested the court to fix the bail applications of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi for hearing on Monday. Bushra Bibi has not been granted bail for over a year.
The petitions reflect the PTI founderโs ongoing legal strategy, emphasizing health concerns alongside procedural arguments. Observers note that the courtโs decision on seeking bail could significantly affect the progression of both high-profile cases.
