The Karachi commissioner has announced new sugar prices for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan 2026 to provide relief to the public.
Authorities confirmed that the new rates are effective immediately. The wholesale price of sugar has been fixed at Rs138 per kilogram, while retail consumers will pay Rs141 per kilogram.
Officials noted that sugar prices vary across different cities. Some areas may offer more reasonable rates, while others could see slightly higher costs depending on local market conditions.
The announcement comes as Pakistan prepares for Ramadan 1447AH. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet in Peshawar on February 18 to sight the crescent moon. Zonal committees across the country will hold simultaneous meetings to confirm the moon sighting.
Chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, the committee will determine whether Ramadan begins on February 19 or 20. Scientific forecasts indicate that the moon, born on February 17, is unlikely to be visible that day. However, clear visibility is expected on February 18, making February 19 the likely first day of Ramadan in Pakistan.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted mostly clear or partly cloudy weather, increasing the chances of sighting the crescent moon.
The new sugar prices announcement aims to ensure availability of sugar at affordable rates during Ramadan. Authorities have urged shopkeepers to comply with the fixed rates to protect consumers from overpricing.
Market analysts believe that these new sugar prices will help stabilize demand during the festive month when consumption typically rises.
With the combination of fair moon sighting forecasts and regulated sugar prices, Pakistanis can prepare for Ramadan 2026 with more certainty. Citizens are advised to follow updates from local authorities regarding sugar availability and moon sighting announcements.
The governmentโs proactive measures reflect its commitment to easing the burden on households during the holy month by providing reasonable rates and ensuring smooth supply of essential commodities.
