PM Reviews New Net Metering Policy as Nepra Seeks Stakeholder Feedback

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the new Net Metering Policy, highlighting the government’s focus on renewable energy and consumer rights.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has invited stakeholders to share their opinions on proposed amendments to the Net Metering Policy. The authority issued a formal advertisement, asking for feedback within 30 days.

Nepra clarified that the amended regulations will remain in effect temporarily during this feedback period. Existing consumers will not face any changes to their rates or contracts. The seven-year agreements and buy-back rates of current net metering users will continue as before.

Under the new guidelines, consumers using renewable energy systems can continue to benefit from net metering rather than net billing. This ensures that households and businesses already enrolled in the program experience no disruption.

After reviewing stakeholder feedback, Nepra will decide whether to hold public hearings or adjust the policy before finalizing the regulations. Authorities emphasized that the process aims to balance consumer interests with sustainable energy growth.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s attention to the Net Metering Policy underscores the government’s commitment to promoting clean energy initiatives. By ensuring transparency and stakeholder participation, Pakistan seeks to strengthen its renewable energy framework.

The new policy framework is expected to encourage more citizens and businesses to invest in solar and other renewable energy solutions. It also aims to enhance energy efficiency while maintaining financial fairness for existing consumers.

Nepra’s public consultation period provides an opportunity for industry players, consumers, and other stakeholders to contribute their perspectives. Their input will play a crucial role in shaping the final Net Metering Policy and ensuring its practical implementation nationwide.
