Millions of users experienced service disruption after YouTube suddenly stopped working on Tuesday night. The company later confirmed that a technical glitch caused the widespread outage.
According to an official update shared by TeamYouTube on X, the issue was linked to the platformโs recommendations system. This system controls which videos appear based on user viewing history. When the system failed, videos did not load properly across several services.
The outage affected YouTube.com, the main mobile app, YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, and YouTube TV. Many users reported seeing blank screens with only the sidebar and search bar visible.
Initially, the company posted that the homepage was restored but a complete fix was still in progress. Shortly after, additional problems were acknowledged. Some users were unable to log in to YouTube TV during the disruption. Officials confirmed this was connected to the broader technical issue.
Engineers worked to fix both the recommendation malfunction and the login problem at the same time.
Timeline of the Disruption
Reports of the YouTube outage began around 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday. Complaints increased quickly as more users faced loading errors.
By approximately 10:15 p.m. Eastern Time, the company confirmed that the issue had been resolved. In a final update, YouTube stated that its recommendations system was fully restored. All platforms were reported to be functioning normally again.
The company also thanked users for their patience during the service interruption.
Global Impact and User Reactions
Outage tracking website Downdetector recorded a sharp increase in error reports during the disruption. More than 1.6 million reports were logged within 24 hours. Around half of those reports came from users in the United States.
However, the issue was not limited to one region. Users in Australia and several other countries also reported blank screens and loading failures.
This incident adds to a series of recent digital platform outages. Major services such as Verizon, Microsoft 365, and TikTok have also faced temporary disruptions in recent months.
