Commission Tells Farooq Sattar “You’re Disturbing” While Rejecting MQM-P’s Plea in Gul Plaza Tragedy

Commission Tells Farooq Sattar “You’re Disturbing” While Rejecting MQM-P’s Plea in Gul Plaza Tragedy

The Judicial Commission investigating the Gul Plaza fire in Karachi addressed disruptions during its latest hearing.

On Saturday, January 17, a massive fire engulfed Gul Plaza on M.A. Jinnah Road. The blaze lasted over 32 hours, trapping dozens and highlighting gaps in the city’s emergency response system.

During the commission meeting, Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) sought permission to become a party to the inquiry. Justice Agha Faisal declined the request, instructing the party to submit any information along with a sworn affidavit.

MQM-P’s counsel, Tariq Mansoor, appeared before the rostrum and mentioned that the party had already sent the requested information via email. Justice Faisal confirmed the procedure for submission but emphasized that the hearing could not be interrupted.

At one point, MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar attempted to speak during the proceedings. Justice Faisal cautioned him, saying “You’re disturbing” the session, and clarified that his input could be heard after the meeting concluded. The statement was repeated to maintain order and ensure the session continued without interruption.

The commission’s handling of the situation demonstrates its commitment to structured proceedings while allowing all parties to contribute in a proper format. The emphasis on submitting material formally rather than interrupting proceedings aims to maintain decorum.

Officials noted that such reminders, including statements like “You’re disturbing,” are standard practice during sensitive hearings to prevent disruptions. The commission will review all submitted affidavits and evidence before making further recommendations.

The Gul Plaza tragedy has prompted widespread public concern, with questions raised about building safety, fire regulations, and emergency preparedness. Authorities continue to investigate causes, accountability, and systemic failures that contributed to the prolonged fire.

By insisting that parties follow formal submission procedures and limiting disruptions, the commission aims to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry. Statements such as “You’re disturbing” underline the need for order in highly sensitive investigations involving multiple stakeholders.

The inquiry continues to gather evidence, witness testimonies, and expert reports to provide a comprehensive account of the Gul Plaza fire and prevent future incidents.
