Punjab Traffic Police has launched a new system to regulate teenage drivers, aiming to address rising road safety concerns. From 1 March 2026, authorities have started issuing Driving Permits to youngsters aged 16 to 18 across the province.
The move comes after months of debate over underage driving and unlicensed riders. Officials say the new Driving Permits system will bring young drivers into a legal framework instead of exposing them to fines and accidents. The decision has received mixed reactions, with some praising the reform and others raising safety concerns.
Under the new rules, teenagers must pass a road test and a traffic sign recognition exam. Applicants must also provide written consent from a parent or guardian. A fee of Rs. 500 is required to obtain the permit. These Driving Permits come with strict restrictions. Holders can only ride motorcycles up to 125cc or low-power electric bikes.
Authorities confirmed that the permit will automatically expire when the holder turns 18. After that, a full driving licence will be mandatory. Officials believe this step will help control unregulated teenage driving while improving accountability on the roads.
The Punjab Cabinet approved the concept earlier this year in January. Lawmakers are also considering expanding similar regulations to small cars in the future. However, no final decision has been announced yet.
Traffic police officials say the main goal is to regulate millions of young riders who already use motorcycles daily. By introducing official Driving Permits, authorities aim to reduce accidents and ensure proper training for young drivers.
Despite the reform, some residents remain concerned about enforcement and monitoring. Road safety experts stress that strict supervision and awareness campaigns are necessary for success. They argue that education and parental responsibility must go hand in hand with legal measures.
The new policy marks a significant shift in how Punjab handles underage driving. Officials hope that the structured permit system will promote safer roads and reduce legal complications for families.
