Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz to Launch Pakistan’s First E-Taxi Scheme Today

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is set to inaugurate Pakistan’s first E-Taxi Scheme today. The initiative aims to promote environmentally friendly transport and create employment opportunities across the province.

According to reports, the project will begin with the introduction of 1,100 electric vehicles in its first phase. Officials say the E-Taxi Scheme is designed to modernize public transport while reducing pollution in major cities.

The Punjab government has also introduced special measures to encourage women to join the program. Around 30 percent of the quota has been reserved for female drivers under the E-Taxi Scheme.

Authorities have planned a unique feature for vehicles driven by women. The taxis operated by female drivers will have a different color. This step aims to make the service easily recognizable and comfortable for passengers.

Financial support is a major part of the program. The government will cover 50 percent of the down payment for male drivers participating in the E-Taxi Scheme. Female drivers will receive even greater support, with the government covering 60 percent of the initial payment.

In addition to the down payment assistance, the government will also pay registration fees for the vehicles. The cost of fitness tests and token tax will also be covered under the scheme.

Officials say the remaining cost of the vehicles will be paid in easy installments over five years. This payment structure is intended to make the program affordable for drivers.

Safety has also been included as a key component of the E-Taxi Scheme. Each electric taxi will be equipped with a special pink safety button. This feature will be connected to the Punjab Safe City Authority for quick emergency response.

The taxis will also be integrated with ride-hailing platforms such as InDrive and Yango. This will help drivers connect with passengers through digital platforms.

To support electric vehicles, fast charging stations will be installed at several public locations. These facilities will allow drivers to charge their vehicles quickly during working hours.

The E-Taxi Scheme will also include digital payment options. Passengers will be able to pay fares through electronic methods, making the service more convenient.
