India Could Lose Snooker Championship Hosting Over Denied Visas To Pakistani Players

India Could Lose Snooker Championship Hosting Over Denied Visas To Pakistani Players

The International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF) has warned India that the upcoming World snooker championship could be relocated if Pakistani players are denied visas.

The announcement follows a dispute over the refusal of visas for Pakistani participants, a problem that also affected the 2024 edition of the event. Last year, Pakistani players were unable to compete after Indian authorities denied them entry.

Abdul Qadir, President of the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association, said the IBSF has made it clear that the championship might be moved to another country if the visa issue remains unresolved.

He added that the governing body had previously warned that Pakistani players would not be allowed to take part unless their visas were approved. The upcoming edition of the snooker championship is scheduled for November in India.

โ€œWe have informed IBSF of our concerns, and we are waiting for guidance from the Government of Pakistan. If the government permits, we will travel to India; otherwise, we will refrain from attending,โ€ Qadir said.

The issue has raised concerns among players and officials, as Pakistan has consistently sent strong contingents to international tournaments. Denying entry to athletes could affect the reputation of the event and the participation of other countries.

IBSF officials emphasized that international sports events should remain inclusive, with all eligible participants given a fair opportunity to compete. They noted that moving the championship could impact planning, logistics, and sponsorship arrangements.

The Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association continues to engage with government authorities to resolve the matter. Players remain hopeful that a solution will be reached, allowing them to represent Pakistan in the prestigious snooker championship.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges in international sports diplomacy, particularly when visa restrictions affect athlete participation. Organizers and federations are closely monitoring developments ahead of the November tournament.
