Karachi police have arrested a man described as a wealthy beggar after discovering a large amount of cash in his belongings.
The suspect, identified as Akbar, was taken into custody from the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area. Officers were shocked by the sheer volume of money found in his bag and shopping carrier.
Police said the recovered cash included notes ranging from Rs10 to Rs5,000. A shopping bag was reportedly filled entirely with Rs10 notes. Additional officers were called to the SHOโs office to help count the cash.
Authorities revealed that Akbar hails from Bahawalpur and had been begging in several parts of Karachi, including Gulshan-e-Memar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and Nazimabad. Police confirmed that a case is being registered against the man.
The arrest of the wealthy beggar has drawn significant attention, highlighting the growing issue of professional begging in major cities. Officials warned that not all beggars are poor, as some may amass substantial sums through begging in crowded areas.
Meanwhile, the district administration in Islamabad has intensified its anti-begging campaign during the holy month of Ramadan. In the past 24 hours, 42 beggars were taken into custody as part of ongoing operations targeting begging at public places.
The campaign covers major roads, traffic signals, and markets, with support from surveillance systems to ensure proper monitoring. Authorities said the special drive is continuing throughout Ramadan to control the rising presence of professional beggars.
The arrest of this wealthy beggar in Karachi serves as a reminder that authorities are increasingly monitoring begging activities across cities. Police and local administrations continue to enforce measures aimed at maintaining public order and addressing exploitation linked to professional begging.
The public has been urged to report suspicious begging activities to local authorities to help curb this growing issue.
