The Punjab government has announced a plan to build 17 new Dams across the province. The initiative aims to manage rainfall better and reduce the risk of floods.
The decision was taken during a meeting on post-flood arrangements. The session was chaired by Maryam Nawaz. Officials reviewed the province’s flood preparedness and future water management strategies.
Authorities said weather forecasts indicate that rainfall this year could be up to 28 percent above normal levels. Because of this prediction, officials believe building more Dams will help store excess water and reduce pressure on rivers.
The proposed Dams will be constructed in different parts of Punjab. These projects aim to improve water storage and support irrigation for agriculture. Small dams can also help control sudden water flow during heavy rains.
During the meeting, officials also approved a new dam project in Chiniot. The project is expected to improve water supply and strengthen flood protection in nearby areas.
In addition, the government discussed increasing the storage capacity at Kalabagh and Sadhnai. Expanding the capacity of existing Dams may help manage large volumes of water during the monsoon season.
Authorities also emphasized the importance of better planning around rivers and canals. Officials said construction in riverbeds will likely be banned to prevent damage during floods.
Experts believe that restricting development in sensitive areas can significantly reduce disaster risks. Floodwaters often become more destructive when natural water channels are blocked.
The government also discussed introducing inflatable dam technology. These modern structures can control water flow more efficiently. Inflatable systems can be adjusted depending on rainfall and water levels.
Officials say such technologies could improve disaster preparedness across Punjab. Better management of Dams and water resources may help protect both urban and rural communities.
Water experts say the province needs long-term planning to deal with climate changes and increasing rainfall patterns. Building new Dams is seen as one step toward strengthening the province’s water infrastructure.
