ISLAMABAD – The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has confirmed that Digital ID cards carry the same legal validity as traditional physical CNICs.
A NADRA spokesperson noted that some government offices and institutions continue to request physical ID cards or photocopies, despite legal recognition of digital credentials. This practice is not in line with existing regulations.
Under the NADRA Ordinance, Digital ID cards are recognized as valid proof of identity. The spokesperson emphasized that unnecessary photocopies of ID cards are discouraged. All government departments, public and financial institutions, and telecom operators must comply with the digital ID regulations.
Citizens who face issues with acceptance of digital IDs can file complaints through NADRA’s official complaint system. This ensures that institutions follow the correct procedures and respect the legal status of digital identity credentials.
Pakistan introduced its first fully digital identity card last year, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation. The announcement was made during NADRA’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in Islamabad.
Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control, Mohsin Raza Naqvi, described the launch as a major advancement in the nation’s digital identity initiative. With the feature integrated into the Pak ID mobile app, citizens can now securely store Digital ID cards on their smartphones, offering convenience and enhanced accessibility.
NADRA’s move reflects a growing global trend of digital identification, aiming to reduce paperwork, increase security, and simplify verification processes for both citizens and institutions. Experts believe this step will significantly improve public service delivery across Pakistan.
