Indian Police Arrest Another Suspect in Bangladeshi Activist Murder Case

Indian authorities have arrested another suspect in connection with the murder of Bangladeshi student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The suspect is accused of helping two prime suspects enter India illegally.

Sharif Osman Hadi, a vocal critic of India and participant in Bangladeshโ€™s 2024 mass uprising, was shot by masked attackers in Dhaka on December 12. He later died in a Singapore hospital from his injuries.

West Bengal police identified Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain as the main suspects. The two allegedly fled Bangladesh through the Haluaghat border shortly after the attack. India arrested them on March 8, and they remain in police custody.

On Sunday, Superintendent Indrajit Sarkar of West Bengalโ€™s Special Task Force confirmed that Philip Sangma was arrested as another suspect for facilitating the illegal entry of Masud and Hossain.

Sarkar said, โ€œSangma was held on Saturday for helping the two prime suspects enter West Bengal illegally. He appeared in district court and was remanded to police custody for a week.โ€

Authorities are continuing investigations to determine if Sangma had connections to other individuals involved in the case. Officials warned that further arrests could follow as more evidence emerges.

Hadiโ€™s killing triggered violent protests in Bangladesh. Protesters torched buildings, including two major newspapers and a cultural institution, angered by what they perceived as Indiaโ€™s influence in the country.

The incident has heightened tensions between India and Bangladesh, which had been strained since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the pro-democracy uprising and sought refuge in India.

Indiaโ€™s Foreign Ministry rejected claims linking New Delhi to Hadiโ€™s murder, calling such narratives โ€œfalse.โ€ Despite this, authorities remain cautious as investigations continue.

In a related development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party on its recent election victory, signaling a potential easing of bilateral tensions.

The arrest of another suspect demonstrates Indiaโ€™s ongoing commitment to cooperating in cross-border investigations and ensuring accountability in high-profile cases.
