UAE Considers Participation in US-Led Strait of Hormuz Security Effort

UAE Considers Participation in US-Led Strait of Hormuz Security Effort

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) may join a US-led campaign to secure the Strait of Hormuz, following an appeal from US President Donald Trump.

Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, spoke about the issue during an online event hosted by the US think tank, Council on Foreign Relations. He highlighted rising tensions in the Gulf and the risks posed to maritime navigation.

Gargash noted that the UAE could participate if a US-led campaign is officially launched. He emphasized, however, that no direct talks are currently ongoing with Iran at any level.

The adviser stressed that maintaining regional stability and protecting global trade remain top priorities. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway, handling the majority of oil exports from Gulf countries to international markets. Any disruption could have serious global economic consequences.

Reports indicate that Iran has previously closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to US and Israeli actions. Iranian forces have also targeted foreign commercial vessels passing through the waterway, heightening fears of a wider conflict.

Earlier, Australia and Japan refused to contribute naval forces to the US-led initiative. Australian Minister Catherine King said the country would not participate, describing the mission as outside Australiaโ€™s responsibilities. Similarly, Japanโ€™s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed that Tokyo has no plans to launch a maritime security operation in the region.

The led campaign follows calls by President Trump for NATO allies and other global powers to send warships to patrol the Strait. Trump has publicly urged China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK to contribute, highlighting the importance of the passage for global energy supply.

The UK Ministry of Defence said it is exploring options with allies to ensure safe navigation. Meanwhile, China has called for an immediate ceasefire and uninterrupted energy supply, without confirming participation in the initiative.

Experts say the UAEโ€™s potential involvement in the US-led campaign would signal regional support for securing the strategic waterway. The situation remains tense, and international attention is focused on the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
