Saudi Arabia has officially announced the date for Eid 2026, confirming that the festival will begin on March 20. The decision was made after the Shawwal crescent moon was not sighted on March 18.
The country’s moon-sighting committee met to review reports from different regions. After verification, officials confirmed that Ramadan would complete 30 days this year. As a result, Eid will be observed the day after the full fasting period ends.
The announcement follows the traditional Islamic method of determining months through lunar observation. Each new month begins only after the sighting of the crescent moon. This process plays a key role in deciding the exact date of Eid every year.
Authorities in Saudi Arabia had earlier issued guidelines for the upcoming holidays. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development confirmed that Eid holidays for private and non-profit sector employees would begin on the evening of March 18. The break will continue for four days.
Officials said the early announcement was made to help both employers and workers prepare. Companies can organize their schedules in advance, while employees can plan their celebrations and travel. Essential services will continue to operate during the holiday period.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Mohammed Al Ruzaiqi, stated that the goal was to ensure clarity. He said the announcement supports smooth operations in key sectors while protecting workers’ rights to enjoy the festive break.
Eid al Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims. It is one of the most important religious celebrations in the Islamic calendar. Families gather for prayers, meals, and social visits during this time.
In Saudi Arabia, large congregational prayers are expected to take place across mosques and open grounds. Authorities usually make special arrangements to manage crowds and ensure safety. The festive atmosphere includes charity, community gatherings, and cultural traditions.
The confirmed Eid date is also important for other countries that follow Saudi Arabia’s moon-sighting announcements. Many nations in the region align their celebrations based on similar observations.
