WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that could change how users manage their chats. The platform is testing an option where messages will disappear after being read. This update aims to improve privacy and give users more control over their conversations.
Currently, WhatsApp allows users to send disappearing messages with set timers. Messages can vanish after 24 hours, seven days, or 90 days. However, the new feature is expected to introduce more flexible timing options, including shorter durations.
According to reports from WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned platform is exploring additional timer settings. Earlier testing suggested that users might soon be able to choose timers as short as one to 12 hours. This would allow more precise control over how long messages remain visible in chats.
The latest development focuses on a new option called “After reading.” This feature will make messages disappear shortly after they are viewed. A shared screenshot suggests that messages will be removed 15 minutes after being sent on the sender’s side.
On the recipient’s side, messages will disappear 15 minutes after they are read. If the message is not opened, it will automatically vanish after 24 hours. This ensures that unread messages do not stay in chats for too long.
The feature is expected to work in both individual and default chat settings. Users may be able to enable it for specific conversations or apply it across all chats. This flexibility could make WhatsApp more appealing for users who value privacy.
Experts believe this update reflects a growing focus on secure messaging. Many users prefer features that limit message visibility and reduce digital footprints. The new option may also help prevent sensitive information from being stored for long periods.
