Mental Health Patient Drives Ambulance To Donate Blood in Lahore

Mental Health Patient Drives Ambulance To Donate Blood in Lahore

In an unusual incident, a patient from a mental health facility drove a blood bank ambulance to Shahdara Hospital to donate blood. The event caused concern among hospital authorities.

According to reports, the patient had been admitted to the mental hospital since 2022. Early in the morning, around 5 am, he managed to access the hospital office while staff were asleep. He took the ambulance keys and left the facility without being noticed.

The patient drove the vehicle himself and reached Shahdara Hospital. Medical staff were surprised to see him arrive alone in the ambulance. Upon arrival, he asked the staff to donate blood, saying, โ€œTake my blood.โ€

Hospital officials said the situation quickly created confusion and alarm. Security staff and doctors gathered to understand how the patient managed to leave the facility and drive the ambulance.

Authorities confirmed that the patient was not harmed during the incident. However, the case raised serious questions about hospital security and patient monitoring. Officials stressed that patients should not have unsupervised access to vehicles or restricted areas.

A four-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 24 hours. The investigation will focus on security lapses and staff responsibility.

The medical superintendent of the mental hospital said an internal review is already underway. He also pointed out that ambulances linked to the Blood Transfusion Authority are not routinely stopped at the hospital gate. This may have allowed the patient to leave without checks.

Health experts say the incident highlights the need for stronger safety measures in medical facilities. Proper supervision is necessary to ensure patient safety and public security.

While the patientโ€™s intent to donate blood appeared harmless, the method raised concerns. Authorities aim to prevent similar incidents in the future through stricter controls and monitoring systems.
