The Pakistan Super League season 11 has started with a major change, as PSL 11 begins without spectators. Lahore Qalandars secured a strong win against Hyderabad Kingsmen in the opening match. However, the usual excitement and crowd presence were missing.
Organisers had earlier announced that the tournament would take place under strict conditions. Matches will be held at only two venues instead of six. The decision was made due to the ongoing war in the Middle East and concerns over fuel shortages.
As PSL 11 begins, the government has introduced austerity measures to conserve fuel. These steps include limiting travel and reducing large public gatherings. As a result, the opening ceremony was cancelled, and stadiums remained empty.
At Lahoreโs Gaddafi Stadium, the atmosphere was quiet. Instead of cheering fans, only security personnel were present. Ground staff prepared the pitch, and cameras were set up for live broadcasts. The usual festive environment was not seen.
Fans expressed disappointment over the restrictions. Nadia Tufail, a cricket fan, said watching matches at the stadium offers a unique experience. She added that the excitement, noise, and crowd energy cannot be matched at home. Despite understanding the situation, she hoped such policies would not continue in the future.
Players also shared similar views. Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam said playing without fans feels different. He noted that supporters bring energy and motivation to the game. However, he encouraged fans to watch and support their teams through television and social media.
As PSL 11 begins, players are adjusting to the unusual conditions. Irfan Khan Niazi of Hyderabad Kingsmen said the team must accept the situation and focus on performance. Lahore Qalandars dominated the opening match and won by 69 runs.
The tournament includes 44 matches and will continue until May 3. Despite the absence of crowds, officials hope viewers will remain engaged through broadcasts. Authorities may review the situation as the tournament progresses.
