PM Shehbaz Announces Fuel Relief Package Amid Oil Crisis

PM Shehbaz Announces Fuel Relief Package Amid Oil Crisis

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has unveiled a comprehensive relief package aimed at protecting Pakistan’s lower and middle-income groups from the impact of soaring global fuel prices. The announcement comes as regional tensions linked to the Iran conflict continue to push international oil markets upward, creating economic pressure across developing economies including Pakistan.

The government introduced targeted fuel subsidies specifically designed for motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers, two groups heavily dependent on daily fuel usage for their livelihoods. Officials said the initiative seeks to reduce transportation costs for millions of citizens while ensuring economic activity continues without placing excessive financial strain on vulnerable communities.

Alongside public relief measures, the federal government has launched a strict austerity campaign to reduce fuel consumption and unnecessary spending. Development expenditures have been significantly curtailed, while ministries have been directed to eliminate non-essential expenses as part of broader efforts to stabilize national finances during ongoing global uncertainty.

During a high-level review meeting on petroleum reserves and relief implementation, authorities confirmed collaboration between federal and provincial administrations to accelerate registration of eligible vehicle owners. A digital relief system is being developed to deliver subsidies directly, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and faster financial assistance without bureaucratic delays.

The prime minister emphasized that the government chose fiscal discipline over increasing oil prices further, redirecting savings from reduced official spending toward public welfare. Measures include limiting the use of sixty percent of official vehicles and reallocating funds toward direct economic relief programs designed to cushion citizens against inflationary pressures.

Officials also assured that Pakistan’s fuel reserves remain stable despite regional instability and that supply chains continue functioning without disruption. Authorities clarified that recent adjustments in high-octane fuel prices have not affected jet fuel costs, while medical supply reserves nationwide remain sufficient to meet healthcare demands.
