Karachi witnessed another tragic incident as a young boy, Ahsan, died after falling into an open manhole in Scheme-33โs Faqeera Goth.
Reports state that Ahsan was playing outside his home with other children when he went missing. While the other children returned safely, Ahsan could not be found. His parents began searching and later discovered his body inside the open manhole, which had no cover.
Rescue officials confirmed that the manhole contained wastewater. Despite immediate efforts to save him, Ahsan was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities expressed deep concern over the recurring nature of such accidents.
This is not the first time a child has lost life due to an uncovered manhole in Karachi. On December 29, 2025, eight-year-old Dilbar Ali fell into an open manhole in Korangiโs Mehran Town, Sector 6-G, and died despite rescue attempts.
Local police and rescue teams responded promptly to recover Ahsanโs body. Officials warned that incidents like these highlight serious lapses in municipal safety and management. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about uncovered manholes and drains in residential areas.
Data from the past year shows a disturbing trend. Fourteen children died after falling into open manholes, while another 13 lost their lives due to uncovered drains across the city. The total of 27 deaths reflects growing public safety concerns in Karachi.
Authorities have urged the municipal administration to take urgent action. Safety measures such as covering manholes, regular inspections, and awareness campaigns are critical to prevent further tragedies.
Residents also called for stricter penalties for negligence and better monitoring of public infrastructure. The repeated incidents underscore the urgent need for coordinated action between city officials and local communities to protect vulnerable children.
As the city mourns another young life lost, experts say comprehensive measures are needed to address the hazards posed by open manholes and prevent further accidents.
