Umme Rubab Chandio Vows To Appeal Mehar Triple Murder Verdict

Umme Rubab Chandio Vows To Appeal Mehar Triple Murder Verdict

Lawyer Umme Rubab Chandio has vowed to challenge the verdict in the Mehar triple murder case at the Sindh High Court (SHC).

On Monday, a model criminal court acquitted all eight accused in the killing of Chandioโ€™s family, ending an eight-year-long legal battle. The court cleared Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders Sardar Ahmed Chandio, his brother Burhan Khan Chandio, former SHO Karim Chandio, and five others.

Speaking to the media, Umme Rubab expressed her determination to continue pursuing justice. She said she will appeal the verdict in higher courts, refusing to accept what she called a grave injustice.

Regretting the courtโ€™s decision, she stated, โ€œSindhโ€™s Sardars have got licence to kill anyone, anytime, and in any manner who oppose the chieftain system, without accountability. There is no one to question them.โ€

She added that the verdictโ€™s implications extend beyond her family, affecting oppressed communities across Sindh. โ€œThis has strengthened my resolve. I will prevail,โ€ she said.

Umme Rubab emphasized, โ€œI will take this legal battle to the High Court and the Supreme Court. While the state courtโ€™s decision is disappointing, I have already won in the court of the people.โ€ She also warned that powerful tribal leaders have effectively got licence to act without fear of legal consequences.

The tragic incident occurred in Mehar, Sindh, on January 17, 2018, when armed men attacked a house, killing Chandioโ€™s father, grandfather, and uncle. Those killed included Raees Karamullah Chandio, chairman of Baldia Union Council, and his two sons, Mukhtiar Chandio and another son associated with the Tumandar Council.

The family alleged the attack was orchestrated by Sardar Ahmed Chandio and his brother Burhan Chandio, who was serving as an aide to the Sindh chief minister at the time. Despite receiving death threats, Umme Rubab pursued justice for her slain family members for years, gaining national attention.

The case went viral in 2021 when a video showed a barefoot Umme Rubab leaving the courtroom, accusing the Sindh government of shielding the perpetrators. She concluded by highlighting that those who oppose the powerful have effectively got licence to act with impunity.
