Immigration New Zealand to Upgrade Family Visa

Immigration New Zealand to Upgrade Family Visa

Immigration New Zealand has announced that starting June 1, 2026, family members of temporary visa holdersโ€”including partners and childrenโ€”will submit their visa applications through an upgraded Immigration Online system.

The updated platform aims to simplify the application process and make it easier for families applying together to manage their submissions efficiently.

Visa Types Included

The new system will handle multiple visa categories for family members of temporary visa holders, including:

  • Visitor visas for partners or children
  • Student visas for dependent children
  • Work visas for partners of temporary visa holders

These applications will now be processed through the same platform already used for other visa types, such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa, Permanent Resident Visa, some visitor visas, and some student visas.

Automatic Linking of Family Applications

A major improvement in the upgraded system is the automatic linking of family applications:

  • A partnerโ€™s visa will be automatically connected to the main applicantโ€™s record
  • Childrenโ€™s applications will be linked to their parentsโ€™ files

This feature is expected to help immigration officers review related applications more efficiently, reducing delays in processing.

Transition for Existing Applications

Applications already submitted through the current system will continue to be processed normally. Applicants who have started but not yet submitted an application can either complete it in the current system or start a new application in the upgraded platform after June 1, 2026. More details about the transition will be shared closer to the implementation date.

Benefits for Families

Immigration New Zealand says the upgrade will help families avoid confusion when submitting documents, ensure applications are reviewed together, and lead to faster decisions. The platform is part of a broader effort to modernize the visa process, making it clearer, faster, and easier for applicants planning to live, study, or work in New Zealand.
