Will The Government Raise Electricity Prices After The Recent Fuel Hike?

Will The Government Raise Electricity Prices After The Recent Fuel Hike?

Federal Minister for Electricity, Awais Laghari, has indicated that a hike electricity prices may be considered following the recent rise in petrol and diesel rates. Consultations are reportedly underway with provinces to explore energy-saving measures and possible adjustments to market hours.

In a statement on X, Laghari said that the energy crisis affects not only oil but also gas and furnace oil. These factors could directly influence electricity tariffs, prompting discussions about a potential hike electricity prices across the country.

The minister emphasized that the government is taking steps to minimize public burden under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifโ€™s leadership. He encouraged citizens to conserve energy, noting that collective efforts could reduce pressure on the national grid and help improve conditions faster.

The government recently announced a significant increase in petroleum prices. Petrol was raised by Rs137.23 per litre to Rs458.40, and diesel by Rs184.49 per litre to Rs520.35. These hikes have sparked public criticism and protests, with opposition parties voicing strong concerns.

Rana Sanaullah, advisor to the Prime Minister, warned that ongoing Middle East tensions could worsen the situation. Rising global oil prices, driven by the conflict, are directly affecting Pakistanโ€™s domestic energy costs and could further justify a hike electricity prices if conditions persist.

Officials are also consulting on changing market closing hours and implementing other measures to save energy. These steps aim to lessen the impact on citizens while managing supply and demand efficiently.

Experts suggest that a combination of rising fuel costs and energy inefficiencies may force the government to adjust electricity tariffs. The public is advised to monitor official announcements and plan for potential increases in monthly bills.

Authorities maintain that any future hike electricity prices will be carefully considered to balance fiscal needs with public affordability. Meanwhile, energy-saving practices remain a priority to reduce the pressure on Pakistanโ€™s power sector.
