Former Punjab Governor Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa Passes Away at 90

LAHORE: Veteran Pakistani politician Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa has passed away at the age of 90. He died at his residence in Lahore after a prolonged illness.

The death of Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa was confirmed by his son, Dost Muhammad Khosa, who served as Chief Minister of Punjab for a brief period.

According to family sources, the body of Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa will be transported to Dera Ghazi Khan. His funeral prayers will be offered there today. The city is his ancestral hometown and political base.

Born in Bahadur Garh in Dera Ghazi Khan, Khosa remained one of the most influential political figures from South Punjab. He played an important role in regional and national politics for several decades.

Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa began his political journey in the early 1960s. He first served as a member of the West Pakistan Assembly from 1962 to 1965. His entry into politics marked the start of a long public career.

Over the years, he was elected multiple times to the Punjab Assembly. He won elections in 1970, 1977, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2008, and 2013. His repeated victories reflected his strong political influence in the region.

During his career, Khosa also served as the 31st Governor of Punjab. He held the position from August 12 to October 12, 1999. At that time, Muhammad Rafiq Tarar was the President, while Nawaz Sharif served as Prime Minister.

In addition to provincial politics, he also served at the federal level. He was elected to the Senate of Pakistan from Punjab. His tenure in the Senate lasted from 2012 to 2018.

In the 2018 general elections, Khosa contested for a National Assembly seat. He ran on the ticket of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf but did not secure victory.

Throughout his political life, he remained associated with several parties. These included Pakistan Muslim League (N), Islami Jamhoori Ittehad, and PTI. At times, he also served as an independent politician.

Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa was widely respected as a senior leader from South Punjab. He maintained strong influence in Dera Ghazi Khan politics.

He is survived by his three sons: Hassamuddin Khosa, Saifuddin Khosa, and Dost Muhammad Khosa. His passing marks the end of a long political era in South Punjab.
