Azerbaijan Offers LNG to Pakistan Amid Energy Crisis

Azerbaijan Offers LNG to Pakistan Amid Energy Crisis

Socar has announced its readiness to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan, offering a potential lifeline as the country faces disruptions in energy imports linked to regional tensions. The offer comes at a critical time when Pakistan is struggling to secure fuel supplies.

The company said a 2025 framework agreement between Socar Trading and Pakistan LNG Limited allows Islamabad to purchase LNG cargoes through a fast-track process. Socar stated it can proceed immediately once a formal request is submitted by the Pakistani side.

Pakistan is currently seeking spot LNG cargoes to manage a growing energy shortfall. The country remains heavily dependent on imported gas, while domestic production continues to decline and global LNG markets face uncertainty due to Middle East tensions.

The situation has worsened due to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor. Pakistani officials confirmed that four LNG cargoes from QatarEnergy have been halted after Iran closed the route again.

State-owned Pakistan State Oil had arranged these shipments under agreements with QatarEnergy. However, deliveries have been suspended until conditions in the strait improve, adding further pressure on Pakistanโ€™s energy supply chain.

Federal Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said Qatar currently has 8 to 10 LNG vessels ready, and Pakistan is trying to secure short-term supplies. Meanwhile, Socarโ€™s offer provides an alternative option, though details about delivery timelines and sourcing remain unclear.
